What is a Professional Practice Model?
The Professional Practice Model (PPM) is a system that supports registered nurse decision-making about the delivery of nursing care and the environment in which care is delivered.
The model is designed to facilitate:
- Professional growth, development and collegiality
- A shift from task-based to process-based thinking and work
- A work environment where the right person is doing the right job
At Baptist, that model is divided into five sections: shared leadership, professional
nursing, professional relationships, patient care delivery system and rewards & recognitions.
Shared Leadership
Baptist nurses are counted on to share in the decision-making for their unit and for the
organization. Each Baptist nurse takes ownership in the areas of performance improvement, utilization of research and literature, scope of practice, regulatory
compliance, ethics and patient safety, among many others.
Professional Nursing
At Baptist, all colleagues’ work should reflect the organization’s mission, vision and values. In addition, patients and hospital leadership rely on nurses to demonstrate autonomy, accountability,
professional development, high-quality care and creativity.
Professional Relationships
A positive working environment is critical to the success of any organization, and Baptist's nurses maintain professional relationships that are collaborative, multidisciplinary and
patient-centered. Baptist's mentoring program plays a key role in maintaining and developing these
relationships.
Patient Care Delivery System
This component of the PPM focuses on care delivery processes through
role clarity for nursing and non-nursing staff (RN, LPN, charge nurse, nursing assistant (NA), clerical). Support
staff are assigned to nurses, not patients. Task delegation, coordination of care, and standards
of practice are defined within this area of the model.
Rewards & Recognition
Finally, Baptist rewards and recognizes excellence in nursing through educational assistance
(tuition reimbursement and seminar/conference funding); structural rewards for professional
achievement (certification bonuses and salary differentials); motivational support for research
or publication through financial and other assistance; and access to professional organizations,
advanced education and certifications.
What are the outcomes?
Through the professional practice model, Baptist strives to increase patient satisfaction
and safety; enhance nurse satisfaction and safety; support research-based/evidence-based nursing
practice; and provide an environment that fosters professional relationships between nurses,
physicians, support staff and patients.
