Watch an excerpt from a story featuring the pharmacy automation system at Baptist Memphis that was broadcast on the November 2004 issue of “Smart Medicine,” a monthly newsmagazine on WKNO Channel 10 (PBS – Memphis).
An important technological advance instituted at several Baptist Memorial hospitals, pharmacy automation has helped those hospitals enhance patient safety and enable its health care staff to become more efficient.
The clinical staffs at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis, Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle (Columbus, Miss.) and Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women (Memphis, Tenn.) can spend more time on patient care as automated systems streamline inventory management, assisting in storing, dispensing and restocking medications daily.
From centralized pharmacies within the hospitals, the robotic systems pick medications from the pharmacy's inventory by reading barcodes and then place the proper dosages in each patient’s individual drawer. The systems also track and manage inventory.
In addition to the systems already in place, Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi (Oxford, Miss.) and Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto (Southaven, Miss.) have plans to install pharmacy automation in the near future.
