Watch an excerpt from a story featuring SimMan that was broadcast on the May 2004 issue of “Smart Medicine,” a monthly newsmagazine on WKNO Channel 10 (PBS – Memphis).
Baptist Memorial Health Care recently created six patient simulation labs. The Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation provided funding for the labs, which help assess and train nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists and physicians.
The labs, among only a few in the country, duplicate actual patient care settings, allowing students and staff to receive education and clinical competency/skill training in a controlled environment. Video equipment and other monitoring systems are included in the lab so student and staff performances can be recorded and assessed at the end of simulations. The instructor can control simulations through a computer or by remote control.
Baptist’s simulation labs include mannequin-based patient simulators to allow for a variety of realistic patient care scenarios. These include SimMan®, a realistic, anatomically accurate mannequin; SimBaby, a 9-month-old baby mannequin; and CathSim® Vascular Access Simulator, a realistic force feedback device that simulates skin stretching, tissue resistance and venipuncture for intravenous procedure training. Also, the simulators can produce spontaneous breathing, heart and lung sounds, as well as coughing, moaning and various voice sounds to give staff practical experience.
Baptist introduced four labs in 2004 at the Baptist College of Health Sciences, Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis, Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi and Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City. As a result of the additional labs provided by the Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation, all Baptist Memorial hospitals, as well as the College, have access to simulation labs.
