Baptist Memorial Health Care partners with school affiliates and senior nursing students to
provide an internship program to help ease the student-to-nurse transition. The program is an
exciting way for students to begin their professional development, improve their knowledge of
the field and develop their technical skills.
A senior nursing student can be hired into the Nurse Intern I job position which provides the
student nurse an opportunity to work under the direction of a registered nurse and to gain
experience in the areas of nursing professionalism, nursing processes and nursing practice.
Performance opportunities and responsibilities can include:
- Phlebotomy venipuncture
- Order entry
- Assisting with dressing changes
- Assisting with collection of data for use in RN assessment/reassessment process
- Transporting patients
- Assisting patients with activities of daily living
- Vital signs
- Communication with staff, patients and guests
- Observation experiences
One of the primary objectives of the intern experience is to help the students judge the quality of their own work. Once nursing students leave the world of formal
education, there no more formal instructors to advise them on the quality of their
performance. To grow in their skills, they must begin to assume the role of judging
themselves. This is part of learning on the continuum. Accurate appraisal gives students and nursing professionals the
self-knowledge they need to make decisions about how they can grow professionally. Coupled with
the ability to self-direct and focus on their own learning, this skill of self-appraisal gives
Baptist interns what they need to grow toward expertise in the nursing profession.
