Memphis
Memphis serves as the vibrant, diverse and exciting metropolitan hub at
the center of a tri-state area that encompasses West Tennessee, North
Mississippi and East Arkansas. With more than a million residents in its
metro population, the city offers housing and amenities on par with
most American cities.
A wide variety in housing and
neighborhoods exists in this large metro area, ranging from Downtown’s
high-rise apartments to the distinguished turn-of-the-century homes in
Midtown to the myriad of single-family dwellings in neighborhoods
throughout the city. In addition, there is a tremendous range of
housing options available in towns and communities surrounding Memphis
such as Germantown, Collierville, Bartlett, Southaven, Olive Branch,
Millington and West Memphis.
For those interested in cultural events, this area offers numerous options – Broadway-style shows at the
historic Orpheum Theatre,
Ballet Memphis,
Opera Memphis, the
Memphis Symphony Orchestra and
Germantown Performing Arts Center
to name a few.
As the birthplace of Rock ’n Roll and The Blues, music plays a central role in Memphis
culture – historic Beale Street,
Sun Studio and
Elvis Presley’s Graceland mansion are all required
destinations. To celebrate this rich musical heritage, the
Memphis in May Music Festival
brings dozens of the biggest names in music to perform on the Bluff
overlooking the Mississippi River every year and live music can be
found every night at any number of venues throughout the city.
The Memphis area also features incredible sports venues that host exciting
events throughout the year. Downtown’s new, $250 million
FedExForum has been hailed as one of
the finest arenas in the country and serves as home to both the
NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies and the University of Memphis basketball team.
You can watch the top prospects in the St. Louis Cardinals system play
all summer long for the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds in downtown’s
beautiful AutoZone Park. For
motorsports fans, the Memphis Motorsports Park
features a variety of races during a season that runs from April to October. Finally, some
of the world’s finest golfers and tennis players respectively make
annual stops in Memphis for the FedEx/St. Jude Classic PGA Tour
tournament at the TPC at Southwind and
The Regions Morgan Keegan Championships at The
Racquet Club of Memphis.
For those who would rather play than watch, there are dozens of public and private golf
courses to choose from and outdoor tennis and basketball courts are available at parks throughout
the metro area. For team sports enthusiasts, recreational leagues can
be found in plenty of sports for all ages in both the city and suburban
areas.
If you’re interested in other outdoor activities, dozens of parks provide
wide open spaces, highlighted by
Shelby Farms.
At approximately 4,500 acres, it is one of the largest urban parks in
the United States. Park
visitors can enjoy walking, mountain biking, horseback riding and
inline skating. Boating, hunting and fishing are also popular outdoor
pastimes here, and with numerous forests and lakes, the Mid-South
provides ample opportunities to follow those pursuits.
Several excellent museums dot the Memphis landscape –
National Civil Rights Museum,
the Pink Palace Museum, and
The Children’s Museum of Memphis – and having
completed more than $50 million in renovation and expansion since the early 1990s, the
Memphis Zoo in Overton Park has become one of the
finest zoological parks in the nation. One of just a handful of zoos to feature giant pandas, it is
home to more than 3,500 animals representing more than 500 different
species.
Opportunities for higher learning abound in Memphis with universities and colleges such
as the University of Memphis,
Christian Brothers University,
Rhodes College,
LeMoyne-Owen College,
Memphis College of Art and
Southwest Tennessee Community College,
offering a wide variety of degree programs. In addition to offering health care-related
undergraduate degrees, the
Baptist College of Health Sciences in Memphis presents numerous
continuing medical education programs for health care professionals.
